Obama Nabs 2nd SD Today!

Winthrop farmer Richard Machacek, an Iowa superdelegate, said today he is pledging to support Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Machacek, a member of the Democratic National Committee, had been uncommitted.

drip,drip, drip

I'm curious what Clinton supporters think. It's been obvious since Super Tuesday that the movement of the SD's has been to Obama. SD's continue to endorse Barack Obama despite, Rev Wright,flag pingate, bitter etc. Are they all wrong? Have they been bamboozled?

farmer.  Why should farmers get a voice in saying who the President is?  What do they know about the real America?  This guy probably got a new pick-up truck from Obama in exchange for his vote, after all Obama has to buy his superdelegates.

Congrats Obama (none / 0)

Congratulations to Barack and his supporters for two SDs today.  Hillary got Gov. Easley so good day for her as well.

Revel in your momentum, truth is that had Barack had a better showing in PA he would have had a tsunami wave of supers ready to come out immediately.  As it stands, it's pretty clear that the Obama campaign needed some positive news to attempt to stem the devastation of past few days and these SDs were convinced that they had to be the positive news.

After May 6, expect Supers to use the cover of Hillary's Indiana double digit win and a slim win for Hillary in NC to come out in moderate numbers for her.

Yes. They're all elitist, {far-left/far-right, choose one for this attack} hypocrites who have it out for Clinton because they all secretly hate democrats.

Hillary's negatives continue to go up, and the SDs can see that.  They aren't blind.  The only thing that keeps Hillary going is the over the hill women vote.  LOL.

P.S. I am an over the hill white woman who supports Obama.

Re: Obama Nabs 2nd SD Today! (none / 0)

It's in reference to polls that suggest the best Clinton can do is keep her negative-image numbers at 50% or so, and anytime she attacks Obama they raise dramatically... raising Obama's negatives at the same time.

Just the fact a lot of people don't like Clinton. Something she'll have to fight if she's to become the nominee.

Clinton can't be the nominee. Whether she's carrying on just to hurt Obama or to soothe her vanity is the only remaining question.

Re: Obama Nabs 2nd SD Today! (none / 0)

Interesting piece in the WSJ today:

"... Obama is heavily favored to win what will be the final and decisive contest for the Democratic presidential nomination -- the "invisible primary" for the convention votes of party leaders."

"... When the year began, about 200 of the superdelegates had taken sides, most for Sen. Clinton. Her campaign, including Mr. Clinton, had quickly signed up Clinton-administration veterans, others on the DNC and elected officials in Arkansas and New York, so that she initially led Sen. Obama by more than 100."

"But the Obama campaign correctly figured that she had gotten the easy pickings and that the rest were up for grabs. Once he began winning more states than she did, her endorsements slowed to a trickle, and her lead eroded to less than two dozen now."

Obama had 20 (none / 0)

ready to pledge right before PA. That's all he is going to get. They are rolling them out slowly to try and generate some sort of organic feel. Question for Obama supporters: if he is the guy, why haven't all the remaining Super Delegates jumped on board?
by linc on Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 12:51:38 PM EST

Re: Obama had 20 (none / 0)

Given how Clinton supporters feel, it wouldn't be appropriate to do that.  It's a sign of respect for Clinton and her supporters to wait.

Re: Obama had 20 (none / 0)

Question for Clinton supporters: if she is the woman, why haven't all the remaining Super Delegates jumped on board?

The answer seems to be that most of the remaining SDs are scared to pick the wrong horse.  So, out of self-interest, they are putting off the decision as long as possible until there is a clear winner.

Re: Obama had 20 (none / 0)

Lots of different possible reasons:

1.  so do not want to offend any significant part of their constituency;

2.  some likely prefer Clinton but don't want to back the likely eventual loser;

3.  some are probably still undecided and want to see how the remaining primaries play out;

4.  some (probably a lot) want to wait until the primaries are over so as not to give the appearance of deciding the nomination; once the primaries are over and Obama maintains his significant pledged delegate lead, they'll have all the cover they need to come forward.

Re: Obama Nabs 2nd SD Today! (none / 0)

The talking point from the Obama camp and media has been that Obama owns the SDs since Super Tuesday. This is an artificial cut off that takes us back almost three months. The more important question is how they have broken since the Wright controversy broke and then after the Pennsylvania primary, since there are still about 280 undeclared SDs currently.
